As head of the elective surgery unit of one of Houston’s largest metropolitan hospitals, I get to spend my evenings with our administrative nurse, basically going over previous day’s events. Usually this session, you know -tallying no-shows -reviewing post-op prognosis, goes way into the wee hours of the night. And it’s usually the last thing I do before heading home for some much needed sleep each day. Of all of my daily tasks at the hospital, this is usually the most mundane –me just sitting there mainly nodding my head till we’re done. That all changed when I arrived in the day-surgery wing this past Tuesday, and discover, instead of 50-something Barbara, our usual administrator, is a temporary replacement
